Kings Beach

The North Shore's beach town —” big sand, big sun and the most interesting food per block on the lake.

The Lay of the Land

Sun, Sand and No Pretense

Kings Beach faces due south, which means all-day sun on the widest stretch of public sand on the North Shore —” the Kings Beach State Recreation Area, right in the middle of town with kayak, SUP and jet-ski rentals lined up at the water. On a July afternoon it's the liveliest square of shoreline north of the state line.

The town behind the beach is refreshingly unpolished: taquerias next to Thai kitchens next to a 1960s burger stand, family motels and mural-splashed blocks. It sits at the foot of CA-267, making it the fastest North Shore base for Northstar and Truckee, with Crystal Bay's casinos a five-minute stroll east.

The Kings Beach Essentials

Beach day

State Rec Area Basics

Paid parking lots flank the beach and fill by late morning in summer; the grassy picnic area and playground make it the easiest family beach on this shore. Rentals on the sand cover everything from SUPs to pedal boats —” details in our Kings Beach guide.

Eat

The Food Crawl

Char-Pit's char-grilled burgers since the 1960s, Jason's Beachside Grille by the water, waterfront pies at Whitecaps Pizza, plus taquerias and Thai spots locals argue about —” start with our casual eats guide.

Do

Beyond the Towel

Paddle toward the boulders of Speedboat Beach at the east end, bike the North Shore's back streets, or drive 10 minutes to the Stateline Fire Lookout for the view back down on town.

Winter

Snow Days

Northstar is 15 minutes up CA-267; the North Tahoe Event Center hosts winter markets; and the beach itself, dusted with snow against blue water, is one of Tahoe's quietly great winter photo stops.

Getting around: Summer traffic crawls along CA-28 through town mid-afternoon —” walk or bike locally, and use the TART bus to reach Tahoe City or Incline without parking headaches. CA-267 over Brockway Summit is the quick road out; carry chains in storms.
