Summer Family Week

A laid-back week of beaches, gentle adventures and one big history day — paced for kids.

The Idea

One Cabin, Five Easy Days

Settle into a cabin or vacation rental with a kitchen and a deck, then let the days unfold slowly: a beach most mornings, one bigger adventure each afternoon, and easy dinners back at the rental.

Nothing here is strenuous — it's built so a wide range of ages can keep up and still feel like they saw the best of Tahoe.

Day by Day

The Plan

Day 1

Arrive & Settle In

Ease into the lake at Kings Beach — wide sand, shallow water, rentals and food all in one place. Grab groceries for the week and let the kids burn off the car ride.

Day 2

Sand Harbor & the East Shore Trail

Walk or bike the flat, paved Tahoe East Shore Trail to Sand Harbor, then spend the afternoon swimming among the boulders in the clearest water around.

Day 3

On the Water

Rent kayaks or a paddleboard, or take a lake cruise. Cap the day with the free Sunday concert and playground at Commons Beach in Tahoe City.

Day 4

A Gentle Hike & a Big View

Hand-feed the birds on the easy Chickadee Ridge walk, then ride up for the panorama — the Heavenly Gondola or a tour of Thunderbird Lodge if you booked ahead.

Day 5

History in Truckee

Take a day trip to Donner Memorial State Park for the museum and Donner Lake beach, then explore historic downtown Truckee before heading home.

Keep it relaxed: With kids, one "headline" activity a day is plenty. Do beaches in the morning when the water is calm and the parking is open, and keep a flexible spare day for a rainy afternoon, a lazy pool day, or a trip you loved enough to repeat.
